“The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled.” – John Berger

This is a project by Anna Hugo created in Oaxaca, Mexico in February 2020. The idea of this book was evoked through John Berger’s “Ways of Seeing”  which offers an approach to art, visual image and language. His text brings to the foreground the importance of perspective and how we look at our surroundings by presenting us with examples of purely pictorial essays. Anna utilized this notion of a pictorial essay in her collection of photographs taken during her 3-week residency at Pocoapoco, which is now formulated in a form of a book. Two copies exist of this essay; one remains with her and the second belongs to the Graphics Arts Institute of Oaxaca in their library of hand-made books.
